Raindrops Keep Fallin’

A long time ago…I met BJ Thomas at a private music industry event in Atlanta.
At that time, while finishing a grad degree in journalism, I was actually seriously considering a career in music promotion. You see, I was working my way through said grad school in a book/record store. BJ was a huge star at the time having sung Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’s iconic theme song, “Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head.” He told us that night he was so strung out the day he recorded that song, he could barely remember singing it.
But BJ found his redemption, and came clean and sober with his wife. He could sing about anything, but that night he was releasing “Home Where I Belong.” It was the first Christian album that went platinum…and it was one of several albums that seriously helped me get my degree. I distinctly remember him seeming a bit uncomfortable with all the attention that night, but he was throughout a cordial and nice guy to all of us who met him.
His journey, like many of ours, was challenging and difficult…his path was not always straight…but I am confident he’s now finally home…where he belongs.
RIP BJ.
